Modifying Jaws
Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.
Herbst Appliance
The Herbst Appliance is an orthodontic device that corrects an overbite by encouraging the lower jaw to catch up in growth. Patients using the appliance see rapid results and feel the benefits of having straight teeth and a properly aligned jaw. The Herbst Appliance prevents the lower jaw from moving backward although opening and closing movement still occurs easily. The device is attached to the back molars on the upper and lower jaws with bands that are cemented into place. Patients using the Herbst Appliance do not have any problems learning to chew their food with their lower jaw in this new position.
MARA Appliance
The MARA is a dental appliance made by the Allesee Orthodontics Laboratory that aims to fix an overbite by shifting your tooth. It is attached to your teeth and helps your lower jaw to move forward, forcing your front teeth to be in line with each other. It also makes you use your jaw in its proper position, subsequently making your jaw used to that position and making it stay there. Your lower front teeth are tipped forward while the upper teeth are held back, making it not easy to spot the difference in jaw size. It’s the easiest to get used to and does not feel obstructive to your normal day.
State of the Art Technology
Using digital imaging technology, we will demonstrate the overall functional and aesthetic benefits of orthognathic surgery. Computerized treatment planning minimizes treatment times, recovery periods and the overall efficacy of your surgery. State-of-the-art materials such as titanium plates and miniature screws provide stability, strength and predictability to your treatment. These advances in technology, procedures and equipment reduce post-surgical recovery time, thus allowing patients to return to their normal routines soon after the surgery. Orthognathic surgery may be unnecessary if orthodontic treatment can correct the problem. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is sometimes the case. We will determine if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you.
Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep associated breathing disorder with profound effects on the health and quality of life of individuals suffering from it. Orthodontists should be well aware of the symptoms of this disorder and competent enough to recognize its signs and symptoms. Orthodontics is well suited for treatment of OSA patients due to their expertise and knowledge regarding growth and development of oro-facial and dento-facial structures as well as orthopedic, orthodontic and surgical correction of the jaws and other supporting tissues. The aim of this article is to provide an outlook to the essential role of orthodontists in the treatment of this serious disease.
