Here at Willowbrook Orthodontics, we understand that brushing your teeth when you have braces can seem impossible at first. It might feel like there is just no way to properly clean your teeth while getting in between the wires and brackets. That’s why we’re always here for our Willowbrook, Morton Grove, Buffalo Grove, and Oak Park, IL area patients. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Ready, Set, Rinse!

You’ll want to rinse your mouth with water before you start to brush your teeth. When you have braces, rinsing your mouth with water will help to remove any loose food particles that have become lodged in your wires. It’s also a good idea to rinse your toothbrush with hot water before starting to brush.

Use the Right Brush

Our orthodontists recommend our Willowbrook, IL patients with braces use a special brush called a proxy brush that is specifically made to get in between small, tight spaces. This brush will clean under and around your brackets and wires. It’s important to clean as thoroughly as possible to prevent plaque and bacteria buildup on the teeth, which can lead to decay. This is more difficult with braces, but the right tools will make it easier.

Brush and Floss

Gently brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth using short strokes, taking care to brush between the wiring and the teeth. Brush for two to three minutes, making sure to also brush your tongue. Flossing is also important to do daily and can be made easier with a floss threader. The threader threads the floss under the wire of your braces, and when it is removed, you can floss the teeth in that section. Repeat until you’ve flossed all teeth as best as possible.
